Vic: Nationals refuse to weigh into leadership debate

MELBOURNE, Aug 16 AAP - Victorian National Party Leader Peter Ryan today refused toweigh into the leadership speculation surrounding the state Liberal Party.

The National Party withdrew from the coalition in July 2000 and could stand to gainseats through disaffected Liberal voters.

Opposition Leader Denis Napthine yesterday expelled Robert Doyle from his frontbenchteam after continued speculation Mr Doyle was engineering a challenge.

Mr Ryan said today he would not comment on who he thought would be the better leader.

"I'm not get to involved in that ... but what I do say is Denis is a very competent,capable and able fellow," he told ABC radio.

"But likewise Rob Doyle - we came to the parliament together in 1992.

"I know each of them very well from the days in government, but they are issues theLiberal Party has to sort out."

Mr Ryan confirmed the National Party would be contesting Dr Napthine's seat in south-westVictoria at the next election.

He said the party would also be holding preselections to contest other Liberal-held seats.

Mr Ryan said he expected the Bracks government to call an election on December 7.
